The Skin Edit by Melissa Jordan
What's the difference — and which one does your skin actually need?
Microneedling has become one of the most popular treatments for improving skin texture, fine lines, enlarged pores and acne scarring. But not all microneedling is the same.
At The Skin Edit in Abbotsford, we offer both Clinical Microneedling and Potenza RF Microneedling because different skin concerns require different approaches.
Clinical microneedling focuses on creating controlled micro-injuries that encourage your skin's natural repair and collagen-production processes. Potenza RF Microneedling takes that process deeper by combining microneedling with radiofrequency energy to stimulate more intensive collagen remodeling and address concerns such as skin laxity, deeper scarring and more advanced textural changes.
Neither treatment is automatically "better." The better question is:
What does your skin need?
Clinical Microneedling
Clinical microneedling — sometimes called collagen induction therapy — uses ultra-fine needles to create controlled microchannels within the skin. These micro-injuries activate the skin's natural healing response, encouraging collagen and elastin production while supporting gradual skin renewal.
Think of it as a controlled signal to your skin:
It's time to repair and rebuild.
Clinical microneedling can be an excellent choice for improving:
Because clinical microneedling does not use radiofrequency heat, it offers a straightforward collagen-induction treatment for clients who want to improve skin texture and quality without the deeper thermal remodeling associated with RF microneedling.
Skin changes gradually. While some clients notice smoother, brighter-looking skin following treatment, collagen remodeling takes time. A series of treatments may be recommended depending on your skin condition, concerns and goals. At The Skin Edit, treatment plans are personalized rather than built around a one-size-fits-all number of sessions.
Potenza RF Microneedling
Potenza RF Microneedling combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy. Fine needles create controlled microchannels while RF energy is delivered into targeted layers of the skin. That combination creates both mechanical stimulation and controlled thermal energy, encouraging deeper collagen and elastin remodeling.
This makes Potenza particularly useful when the concern isn't simply what's happening on the surface of the skin, but the underlying structure and firmness as well.
Potenza RF Microneedling may be used to address:
Clinical microneedling focuses primarily on collagen induction and skin quality. Potenza adds RF energy when deeper remodeling and tightening are part of the goal.
RF Microneedling vs Microneedling
The biggest difference is radiofrequency energy and treatment depth.
| Clinical Microneedling | Potenza RF Microneedling | |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Mechanical microneedling | Microneedling + radiofrequency |
| Primary Goal | Collagen induction and skin renewal | Deeper collagen remodeling and tightening |
| Common Concerns | Texture, pores, fine lines, mild scarring | Laxity, deeper scarring, wrinkles and texture |
| Thermal Energy | No | Yes |
| Treatment Depth | Customized mechanical needling | Adjustable needling combined with RF energy |
| Downtime | Generally mild | Generally mild to moderate |
| Best Approach | Skin quality and maintenance | More advanced corrective treatment |
The important part is that these treatments don't necessarily compete with each other. They can serve different roles within a long-term skin health plan.
Sometimes your skin doesn't need the biggest treatment available. It needs the right amount of treatment.
Clinical microneedling can be a great option when your primary goals are improving texture, supporting collagen production, softening early fine lines, reducing the appearance of pores or addressing mild acne scarring. It can also work well as part of an ongoing skin-maintenance strategy.
For clients beginning corrective skin treatments, it may be exactly where we start.
No over-treating required.
When skin concerns extend deeper — particularly laxity, loss of firmness or more established scarring — adding radiofrequency energy gives us another tool. Potenza RF Microneedling allows RF energy to be delivered below the skin's surface through the microneedles, creating controlled thermal stimulation within targeted tissue.
This deeper remodeling response can make Potenza particularly useful for:
Skin laxity and firmness
RF energy supports collagen contraction and longer-term remodeling, making it useful for areas where skin has begun to lose firmness.
Acne scarring
The combination of controlled needling and RF energy can target deeper structural changes associated with acne scars.
Texture and enlarged pores
Collagen remodeling can gradually improve uneven texture and the appearance of enlarged pores.
Fine lines and wrinkles
By stimulating new collagen within deeper layers of the skin, RF microneedling can help soften the appearance of lines over time.
Neck and jawline concerns
Potenza can be used beyond the central face, including areas where skin laxity and crepey texture may become more noticeable.
One feature that differentiates the Potenza system is its Fusion Tip technology. The Fusion Tip is designed to enhance the topical penetration of selected products during treatment.
Depending on the treatment protocol and your individual skin needs, this provides another way to customize the procedure rather than treating every client's skin exactly the same way.
And customization matters. Because your skin doesn't care what happens to be trending on social media.
Recovery depends on the type and intensity of treatment performed. Following clinical microneedling, you may experience temporary redness, sensitivity or tightness as the skin begins its natural recovery process.
Following Potenza RF Microneedling, redness, warmth, mild swelling or tightness can occur. Some clients may also notice temporary pinpoint marks or mild flaking as the skin heals. These effects generally improve over the following days.
You'll receive specific pre- and post-treatment instructions based on your procedure and skin.
Proper home care matters. More treatment isn't always the answer — better recovery and consistency matter too.
Microneedling isn't an instant-gratification treatment. And that's actually the point. You may notice improvements in brightness and texture relatively early, but collagen remodeling continues beneath the surface for weeks after treatment.
With RF microneedling, improvements related to firmness, texture and scarring can continue developing as new collagen is produced and remodeled. Results vary according to your age, skin condition, treatment intensity, number of treatments, home care and individual healing response.
Good skin is built. Not rushed.
Neither treatment is universally better.
Clinical microneedling may be more appropriate when your main concerns are skin texture, pores, early fine lines, mild scarring or general collagen support.
Potenza RF Microneedling may be more appropriate when your concerns include skin laxity, deeper acne scarring, more advanced wrinkles or deeper structural remodeling.
And sometimes the answer isn't choosing one forever. Your treatment plan can evolve as your skin does.
That's why we start with your skin rather than a treatment menu.
At The Skin Edit by Melissa Jordan, treatments are selected around your skin, your concerns and where you want to go — not simply around the latest aesthetic trend.
Our approach combines corrective treatments, preventative skin health and professional home care to support results over the long term. Because healthy skin isn't created in one appointment. It's built through thoughtful treatment, consistency and knowing when to do more — and when not to.
Less hype. Smarter skin care.
Start with a skin consultation. We'll assess your skin, discuss what you'd like to improve and determine whether Clinical Microneedling, Potenza RF Microneedling or another treatment makes the most sense for your skin.
Your skin. Thoughtfully edited.
